Get the assessment before the equipment

A grab rail in the wrong place is worse than none, because it gets trusted. An occupational therapist assessment costs a fraction of the work and changes what goes where.

Don't do one thing at a time. If the shower needs work, look at the toilet, entry step and lighting too: one visit is cheaper than four.

Equipment and budgets

Equipment and modifications are funded. Sequencing a big job against your quarterly budget changes what you can afford, so talk to us first.

Are home modifications covered?

Yes, modifications and equipment that keep you safe at home are funded under Support at Home. Larger ones may need an OT assessment and approval.

Do I need an OT assessment first?

For anything structural, yes, and we'd recommend it even where it isn't required. It's cheap relative to the work and often changes the plan.

Can I get a personal alarm?

Assistive technology including personal alarms and fall detection can be funded. What's available depends on partners in your area.
